MATH TERMS FOR EXPONENTS

Exponent: shows how many times a number, the base, is multiplied by itself
Base: the number that is multiplied by itself
Coefficient: a constant number that multiplies a variable

Example: 4x2 --> 4 is the coefficient; x is the base; 2 is the exponent

RULES FOR EXPONENT PROBLEMS

Bases are the Same                                                            Exponents are the Same

Addition                        Raise bases to the power, then add                                     Raise bases to the power, then add
                                        [ex. 42 + 43 = 16 + 64 = 80]                                                    [ex. 52 + 42 = 25 +16 = 41]

Subtraction                 Raise bases to the power, then subtract                               Raise bases to the power, then subtract
                                       [ex. 42 - 43 = 16 - 64 = -48]                                                      [ex. 52 - 42 = 25 -16 = 9]

Multiplication              Keep the base , then add the exponents                               Keep the exponent, then multiply the bases
                                       [ex. 32× 33 = 3(2 + 3) = 35]                                                         [ex. 32× 52 = (3×5)2 = 152]

Division                       Keep the base , then subtract the exponents                         Keep the exponent , then divide the bases
                                       [ex. 36 ÷ 34 = 3(6-4) = 32]                                                           [ex. 62÷ 32 = 22 = 4]

Raising to a Power   Keep the base , then multiply the exponents                          Keep the base , then multiply the exponents
                                       [ex. (23)7 = 2(3×7) = 221]                                                            [ex. (23)3 = 29 = 512]
