TERMS FOR FUNCTION PROBLEMS

Function: mathematical association between members of one group and another.
Domain: x-values that are possible in the function, equivalent to x
Range: y-values that are possible in the function, equivalent to f(x)

RULES FOR FUNCTION PROBLEMS
1) Although
f(x) and x are the most commonly used variables, functions can use any variables
2)
f(x) can not be separated into f and (x) but instead works as one unit
3) the (x)-value in f(x) can only be plugged into the right side of the function

Examples of Rules
1) If f(x) = x + 1, then f(2x) = 2x + 1;
If g(t) = 2t -7, then g(2t) = 2(2t) -7
2) If f(x) = x + 1, then 2f(x) = 2(x + 1);
If j(h) = 12h + 4, then 3j(h) = 3(12h + 4)

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR FUNCTIONS

1. If f(x) = (x2 - 6) / x for all non-zero x, then what is the value of f(3)?

      Solution
      f(x) = (x
2 - 6) / x
      f(3) = (3
2 - 6) / 3
      f(3) = 3 / 3 = 1

2. If the total profit p, in dollars, raised by selling c cookies is given by the function
    p(c) =5c - 10 , then how many cookies must be sold in order to raise $325?

     Solution
    p(c) = total profit = $325; c = number of cookies sold = ?
    p(c) = 5c -10
    325 =5c -10     [Plug total profit into p(c).]
    315 = 5c
    c = 63 cookies
