RULES FOR RECTANGLE & SQUARE PROBLEMS

• Perimeter of a Rectangle = 2(length) + 2(width), or 2l + 2w
• Perimeter of a Square = 4 × (side length), or 4s
• Area of a Rectangle = length × width, or lw
• Area of a Square = side × side, or s²

TIPS FOR RECTANGLE & SQUARE PROBLEMS

TIP 1: Focus on the side lengths in square and rectangle problems. If the lengths are given, fill them in immediately. If they are not given, use other information in the problem to get them.

TIP 2: When circles are combined with a rectangle or square in a problem, use the side lengths of the rectangle or square to determine the radius or diameter of the circle.

SAMPLE PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR RECTANGLES & SQUARES

1. The area of a rectangular back yard is 37,500 square meters. If the width of the yard is 300 meters, what is the perimeter of the yard?

      Solution
      1) Area of a Rectangle = length × width
          37,500 = (length)(300)
          length = 125 meters

      2) Perimeter = 2(length) + 2(width)
                             = 2(125) + 2(300)
                             = 250 + 600 = 850 meters
